UK artist Stuart Middleton presents two works across the ICA. ‘Beat’ begins in the Lower Gallery with a site-specific installation that was developed in response to the architecture of the ICA, enquires into ‘landscape’ as a product of human design. In the Upper Gallery a new stop-frame animation commissioned by the ICA explores the white-washed austerity of vivisection laboratories, euthanasia clinics and art galleries.

Elsewhere in the Upper Gallery, Frans Masereel’s seminal 1925 ‘The City’ is displayed in individual woodcut prints. ‘The City’ is a ‘wordless novel’ detailing the daily encounters of multiple individuals within an anonymous metropolis, and is universally acknowledged as a precursor to the contemporary graphic novel.

The ICA Fox Reading Room presents the collaborative and socially-engaged poster work of Peter Dunn and Loraine Leeson produced between 1977 and 1980, which focused on health issues of the time: the Bethnal Green Hospital Campaign (1977-78) and the East London Health Project (1978- 1980).

Exhibitions continue until 2 July 2017 Free Admission
